Quad

Glen Winton’s influence.

Glen was well ahead of his time and although I didn’t use his type of flexing fins as I do now, my 59 quad gave me my first ever experience of consecutive bottom turn/top turn combos. The four fin surfboards from that era, the late 80′s especially, still retained enough area and thickness throughout, to counter the potentially over grippy effect that quads can have when bunched too tightly at the tail of the board. Being one of the hardest fin combinations to get right, it is understandable that many shapers just went back to the good ole trifin. With no lightweight fin systems around at that the time, few shapers would risk further experimentation and so they faded into the back ground for over 20 years till their recent comeback.
